 Misplaced Modifiers
The purpose of a modifier in a sentence is to clarify or further describe a word or phrase to give better meaning to the words it modifies.

The rule is very simple when it comes to fixing misplaced modifiers. Have the clause or phrase modifiers as close as possible to the words they modify.

Example: In the following sentence, the reader might think that Greg had never seen his camera.

When Greg went to the zoo he took many photographs of animals with his new camera that he never saw before.

Greg had never seen the animals before.

When Greg went to the zoo he took many photographs with his new camera of animals that he never saw before.

 Dangling Modifiers
Sometimes the author may add a modifier to a sentence when there is nothing in the sentence for the modifier to modify. This is called a dangling modifier, and needs to be corrected. You will need to figure out what the modifier is trying to modify and then help it by adding a phrase or word for the modifier to modify.
Example: In the following sentence, her foot appears to modify running through the supermarket It is probably a person and not just a foot that is running through the supermarket.

Running through the supermarket, her foot slipped on a broken bottle of apple juice.

There are two ways to fix this sentence.

Running through the supermarket, she slipped on a broken bottle of apple juice.

While she was running through the supermarket, her foot slipped on a broken bottle of apple juice.
